10 Basketball Drills to Master the Fundamentals

These ten drills focus on essential basketball skills, suitable for players of all levels looking to improve their game. Remember to focus on proper form and technique before increasing speed.

1. Stationary Dribbling:

  • Purpose: Develops ball control, hand-eye coordination, and both-hand dribbling.
  • How-to: Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, knees bent. Dribble the ball with your right hand, low to the ground, for 30 seconds. Switch to your left hand for 30 seconds. Repeat, alternating hands and gradually increasing speed.
  • Variations: Dribble high and low, in front and behind your legs.

2. Crossover Dribbling:

  • Purpose: Improves ball-handling and the ability to change direction quickly.
  • How-to: Dribble with your right hand, then quickly cross the ball over to your left hand in front of your body. Continue dribbling with your left hand, then cross back to your right. Repeat, alternating hands and increasing speed.
  • Variations: Combine with behind-the-back dribbles and between-the-legs dribbles.

3. Figure 8 Dribbling:

  • Purpose: Enhances coordination and ball control while moving.
  • How-to: Dribble the ball in a figure-8 pattern around your legs, alternating hands with each pass through. Start slowly, focusing on control, then gradually increase speed.

4. Wall Passing:

  • Purpose: Develops accurate passing technique with both hands.
  • How-to: Stand facing a wall, about 5 feet away. Pass the ball with your right hand against the wall, and catch it with your left. Repeat with the left hand, alternating hands and increasing the speed and force of your passes.
  • Variations: Use different types of passes (chest pass, bounce pass, overhead pass).

5. Layup Lines:

  • Purpose: Masters the fundamental layup technique.
  • How-to: Start at the free-throw line, dribble towards the basket, and perform a layup with your right hand. Repeat on the other side with your left hand. Focus on proper footwork (right-hand layup = left foot takeoff) and soft touch off the backboard.
  • Variations: Add defenders, use different starting points, and practice reverse layups.

6. Form Shooting:

  • Purpose: Develops consistent shooting mechanics and muscle memory.
  • How-to: Stand close to the basket, without jumping, and focus on proper shooting form: balanced stance, elbow in, follow-through. Take 10 shots with your right hand, then 10 with your left. Gradually increase distance as your accuracy improves.
  • Variations: Incorporate game-like situations (shooting off the dribble, after a pass).

7. Free Throw Practice:

  • Purpose: Improves free throw accuracy and mental focus.
  • How-to: Shoot 10 free throws, focusing on your routine and consistent form. Visualize the ball going through the hoop. Track your progress and identify areas for improvement.

8. Defensive Slides:

  • Purpose: Improves lateral movement, footwork, and defensive stance.
  • How-to: Assume a defensive stance (feet shoulder-width apart, knees bent, hands active). Slide laterally to the right, then to the left, maintaining your stance and keeping your feet moving. Increase speed and distance as you improve.
  • Variations: Add cones or markers to practice changing direction.

9. Box Out Drills:

  • Purpose: Develops proper rebounding technique and positioning.
  • How-to: Partner up with another player. Stand near the basket, facing each other. When the coach throws the ball off the backboard, practice boxing out your opponent using your body and securing the rebound.

10. Conditioning:

  • Purpose: Improves stamina and endurance, essential for playing basketball.
  • How-to: Incorporate running, jumping, and agility drills into your practice. Run sprints, suicides, and perform jump rope exercises. This will help you stay on the court longer and perform at your best.
